Local non-profit Global Empowerment Mission is sending truck loads of everything from makeup and water to dog food to North Carolina, Tennessee and other areas affected by Hurricane Helene.
GEM is a non-profit disaster relief organization located at Doral that was founded in response to the 2010 Haiti Earthquake.
During the last 12 years, it has helped countless families get back on their feet, sending supplies such as water, clothes and canned food.
“As long as we have supplies,as long as there is a way to get to the communities, we are able to supply,” said Alistair Kiyingi, the community engagement manager of GEM.
Even before Hurricane Helene, GEM was already preparing for the catastrophe, sending trucks full of supplies up north. As of Tuesday morning 10 trucks have departed from their headquarters towards the affected areas, bringing with them not only much needed resources but also an opportunity for families in need to keep their heads up.
Many young students have joined forces with the organization after witnessing the fallout of Hurricane Helene.
“I actually feel like I am impacting a lot of families,” said Casey Obando, a 19 year old Miami Dade College student volunteer at GEM. “I feel like I did the right thing, and I feel more grateful for what I have.”
