Greek carnival season brings local festivals to South Florida (includes video story)

Among South Florida’s rich blend of Latin American cultures lies a hidden gem — Greek culture.

The Miami Greek Festival just celebrated its 43rd year of hosting local communities for family friendly activities, food, songs and traditional dancing.

Held from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2 at St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church, 7901 No. Kendall Dr. the event was open to all who appreciate the culture.

“We enjoy sharing our culture with the community, and they seem to enjoy it a lot,” said Mercina Drake, a festival volunteer. “We share our food, we share dance, we share our song. It’s just what we like to do.”

Embedded within Greek culture is religion. Many of those involved in the festival also volunteer at St. Andrews.

“I would feel very empty if I did not do this,” said Christina Maroudas, a volunteer. She has danced in St. Andrew’s Greek folklore dance program since she was young and does so to be in touch with her Greek roots.
