Harris hosts presidential election watch party at Howard University (includes video story)

Tonight, Vice President Kamala Harris will return to her alma mater, Howard University, for her presidential election watch party—the first event of its kind at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

Howard’s open-air area, The Yard, is set up for the event, though access is heavily restricted. While some students, like Casaya Achampong, expressed disappointment about missing the celebration.

“It would be amazing to be in the yard and celebrate with her, but I don’t think that’s an opportunity for students as it is for faculty and guests,” Achampong said.

Classes have been canceled, and campus buildings are closed for the day. The campus department of public safety is working with local and national law enforcement.

“It’s overwhelming because we’re not used to so much activity,” noted student-athlete Courtney McClure.

For Harris, who graduated from Howard in 1986 with a Bachelor’s degree, the event is a homecoming, and students feel inspired by her journey. “Our [school’s] nickname is the Mecca,” said student Leila Diallo. “It’s just all so fitting, and I am really excited.”

Student athlete Samone Knight shared, “Knowing she once walked these same halls and is now running for the highest office in America is inspiring for us all.”

The university says if no winner is declared tonight, the campaign will extend its stay on campus.

This election is expected to see a record turnout of young voters nationwide, and Howard University is no exception.
