The results for mayor of the City of Progress are in, and they’re not even close. At the historic Hialeah Park Casino, Bryan Calvo celebrated a decisive victory Tuesday night, securing nearly 53% of the vote, more than 9,000 ballots, and leaving his four challengers far behind.
“I knocked on thousands of doors, I talked about the issues with the residents, I told them my plan,” Calvo said during his victory speech. “The campaign focused on issues and hard work, and that’s why we see the victory we see tonight.”
Calvo, a Harvard and FIU-educated attorney, first made history as Hialeah’s youngest-ever city councilman. Now, he becomes one of the youngest mayors in Florida.
Supporters filled the area outside the casino, waving signs, cheering, and calling the victory a moment of change for the city.
“I feel really happy. I’ve supported him since the first day, and I really wanted from the heart that he could win because he’s a good young man,” said Orlando Moreno, a Hialeah resident. “I’m pretty sure he will fix everything that is bad with this city.”
For many in attendance, Calvo’s win symbolized hope for new leadership and fresh ideas.
“We are going to feel new changes,” said Iris Sanchez, another Hialeah resident. “Everything he has promised, I know and have a lot of faith that he will achieve it.”
