Honoring Cuban women: icons and everyday heroes shaping Miami’s legacy

With Women’s History Month coming to to a close this Sunday, we honor the resilience and contributions of Cuban women who have shaped culture, broken barriers, and inspired generations. One of these is Carmen Herrera, a groundbreaking artist who gained global acclaim for her minimalist masterpieces. Another is María Teresa Mora, Cuba’s first female national chess champion, and Celia Cruz, whose voice became a symbol of joy and resistance, these women laid the foundation for future generations to rise and thrive.

Adding to that legacy is Anabel Garcia, Director of Operations at DOF Ground, a family-owned logistics company based in Miami. Anabel came to the United States at a young age with her parents and brother, starting from scratch like many Cuban families who arrived seeking opportunity. Her parents didn’t speak English and worked multiple jobs just to keep the family afloat. Anabel often had to step up and help navigate systems, translate, and support her family however she could, which was a common experience for many immigrant children.

For Anabel, success is not only about growth, but about legacy. Honoring the sacrifices her parents made and building something that will last. She sees Cuban women as essential to the future of Miami: ambitious, driven, and determined not only to pursue education but to carve out meaningful careers and leadership roles.
