On Thursday, July 25, professional wrestling legend and WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan died at age 71 after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater.
Born Terry Bollea, Hogan began his journey as a fan and musician before his imposing height and charisma caught the attention of professional wrestlers as well as promoters.
He was given the nickname “Hulk” because he was bigger than Lou Ferrigno, star of “The Incredible Hulk”.
His on-screen personality and charisma grew with fans across the world. “Since I’m the number one in professional wrestling, everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon man!”, he said in a promotional video.
Despite his wrestling success, Hogan’s reputation took a hit in 1994 when he admitted in court to using steroids during his time in the WWE.
He later attempted to reinvent himself through reality television, starring with his family in the VH1 series “Hogan Knows Best,” which was filmed in part at his Clearwater home and in Miami Beach.
The show’s wholesome image was disrupted by his high-profile divorce and the leak of a sex tape allegedly involving Hogan and a married woman.
Hogan sued the website Gawker for invasion of privacy and was awarded a $31 million settlement.
He also purchased a $12 million dollar bayfront home in 2006, that include a 12 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, and wrestling ring.
He sold it the next year to famed “Transformers” director Micheal Bay for $19 million dollars.
In South Florida, where Hogan maintained strong ties, tributes poured in. Local restaurant chain Flanigan’s shared a video showing Hogan enjoying burgers and beers, celebrating his legacy.
