Protests have erupted in major cities across the United States in response to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and recent actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Demonstrations have taken place in New York, Chicago, Boston, Denver and Los Angeles.
In Los Angeles, thousands have taken to the streets. City officials emphasize that most protesters are peaceful, but tensions have escalated as law enforcement arrested nearly 200 people on Tuesday. The situation intensified to the point that part of the city was placed under curfew.
Council member Ysabel Jurado warned that while demonstrations start peacefully, “another element moves in” as the rallies wind down. Mayor Karen Bass has called for an end to ICE raids, stating they disrupt the city’s stability.
Meanwhile, National Guard members have been deployed to L.A. without Governor Gavin Newsom’s approval. He criticized the president’s actions, saying, “This brazen abuse of power by a sitting president inflamed a combustible situation, putting our people, our officers, and even our national guard at risk.”
The White House maintains that undocumented immigrants violated the law by entering the country illegally, but protesters argue that peaceful, law-abiding individuals shouldn’t be targeted. The conflict continues to spotlight the deep national divide over immigration enforcement and the limits of presidential power.
