Stay or Go: Immigration in South Florida (includes audio story)

How have recent immigration policies affect South Floridians? In a region made up of many immigrant communities, politics regarding migration holds a special place for locals. Recently President Donald Trump’s administration has been seeking to end Temporary Protected Status, which shields immigrants such as Haitians and Venezuelans.

Episode 1: Daniela Dieppa

In this episode, we speak to Daniela Dieppa, president of the College Republican organization at Florida International University. Dieppa is a conservative Cuban-American political activist who explains why she supports the current administration’s efforts to block or restrict immigration. She also describes how she developed her political beliefs, leading her to her current ideology and her general views on American politics.

Episode 2: Flora Canaie

In this episode, we speak to Flora Canaie, a Venezuelan immigrant currently shielded by TPS and working as a house cleaner in Miami-Dade. Canaie discusses her upbringing, her life in Venezuela and Trinidad, and her decision to move to America with her husband. She discusses her worries for the future, with her husband disabled and needing medical attention, and with her legal situation in the air.
