Residents in Central U.S. suffer from structural damage, power outages (includes video story)

Massive tornadoes have swept across the Central U.S., placing more than 10 million people under threat, while Indiana and eastern Texas are reporting significant structural damage, power outages and multiple fatalities.

The Central U.S. tornado outbreak continues shifting eastward, maintaining severe weather risks across the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic.

“Grateful, grateful as one should be,” said Theresa Cox from Knox, Indiana.

“That hail was hitting really hard, but I didn’t get any damage, so I was thankful for that,” said Kathy Kimmel, another Knox resident, who avoided the large tornado.

Indiana experienced some of the most severe impacts during this outbreak, with lines of storms and confirmed fatalities. Lake Village, a town in Indiana, suffered a direct hit — multiple homes were destroyed and an elderly couple was killed.

“We heard a big boom. And it got nasty. It got real nasty,” said Josh Roland, who lives in Lake Village.

Emergency crews described the scene as “total devastation.”

Earlier this weekend, eastern Texas also faced severe overnight storms including outages after overnight storms and fallen trees in Upshur County.

As assessments of multiple long-track tornadoes continue, including widespread damage in Indiana and destruction to infrastructure, more detailed damage reports are expected to emerge.
