Academy product Alexander Shaw, 18, living ‘a dream’ with Inter Miami

Thirteen minutes after entering the field, Alexander Shaw had his first chance to shoot on goal. Without hesitation, he unleashed a powerful right-footed strike that found the back of the net, leaving the goalkeeper on the floor. Just like that, he had his first professional goal.

The goal came in the 89th minute, when the ball fell to Shaw at the edge of the penalty area following a poor clearance by the CF Montreal defense.

Playing in front of 26,066 fans at Inter Miami FC’s Nu Stadium, surrounded by family and friends in the city where he grew up, the young prospect couldn’t have asked for a better night. On an evening filled with stellar performances — including goals from Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Casemiro — Shaw rose to the occasion and made his own contribution to the final scoreline.

Inter Miami defeated Montreal 7-1 in a match dominated by the home team last Saturday night. While it was just another league game in the grand scheme of a long MLS season, for Shaw, it represented a significant milestone — after years of hard work — and the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

FROM ACADEMY TO THE TEAM

Before joining Inter Miami’s first team, Shaw developed his skills and character in the club’s youth academy in Fort Lauderdale. Born in 2008 in Orlando, Shaw grew up with his family in South Florida, where he fell in love with the beautiful game.

“I used to come here as a ball boy all the time and watch players like Ian Fray or Noah Allen — all those guys I look up to — scoring goals,” Shaw said after the win on Saturday. “And I just wanted to do the same.”

Working his way through Inter Miami’s youth ranks, Shaw made his debut with the club’s second team in July 2025 and competed in that year’s MLS Next Pro season.

In early 2026, the club announced the signing of the midfielder as a Homegrown Player, making him the eleventh player to do so. His contract is short-term, running through the end of this season. However, it includes an extension option based on the player’s performance.

This goal not only marked an emotional moment for the player, but also validated the club’s focus on youth development, demonstrating that its investment in young talent is bearing fruit.

After the victory, Inter Miami interim coach Guillermo Hoyos highlighted the talent that academy graduates are bringing to the team.

“It’s a really rich roster,” he said. “We have young players coming up strong from the academy.”

Including Shaw, a midfielder he lauded for his Saturday performance, emphasizing his achievement at such a young age.

“He makes us much better,” he said. “Alexander scored a goal. He has progressed very well at just 18 years old.”

LEARNING ALONGSIDE GLOBAL SUPERSTARS

Very few players have the opportunity to begin their professional careers alongside teammates as globally renowned as Shaw has with Inter Miami.

Shaw shares training camps, practice sessions and the locker room discussions with players such as Messi — considered by many as the best player in the world — Suarez, one of FC Barcelona’s greatest goal scorers, and Casemiro, a legendary Real Madrid midfielder, among others.

For young players like Shaw, they are not just teammates. They’ve become role models to learn from every day.

“I’m living my kid’s dream,” he said. “Being able to [score] here, is just a blessing, with the greatest players in the world.”

After the game, Shaw shared his thoughts on playing alongside Messi on a night when he authored a four-goal performance.

“It’s what I see every day out on the field, so it doesn’t surprise me much,” Shaw said. “But being part of tonight, and celebrating with them, is a dream.”

For players fresh out of the academy, playing alongside such experienced and successful players is a great opportunity to boost their own sporting careers, off the field as well. They get the chance to receive advice on a personal level.

At such a young age, Shaw still has a long way to go in his soccer career. There is still much to learn, yet his goal against Montreal offers a glimpse of everything he can achieve.

WITH A NEW COACH COMES A NEW OPPORTUNITY?

Inter Miami is on the verge of a new era after announcing late last month that Cristian “Kily” Gonzalez will replace Hoyos as the club’s new head coach. For a player like Shaw, this change could bring uncertainty, but it also presents a great opportunity.

A new coach represents a fresh start for a team. New coaches bring new ideas and strategies to strengthen the squad, giving young players the chance to prove why they deserve their place on the club.

Naturally, as a new leader takes over a roster that has championship dreams, questions will arise around how he may utilize younger players fresh out of the academy. Sure, they possess talent, but they do not have the experience of a professional title run that so many Inter Miami veterans own.

Just how will Gonzalez leverage the youthful enthusiasm of Shaw to strengthen his team? That answer may begin to materialize on Saturday, when Inter Miami hosts Atlanta United at Nu Stadium. But as of Wednesday, Gonzalez was still awaiting a work permit and had not yet arrived in Florida.

Until then, there are several questions around Shaw’s immediate playing future. But after his first goal — on a grand, primetime MLS stage no less — one thing is for sure: His journey is only just beginning.
