The nation will bid its final farewell to former President Jimmy Carter today at a state funeral held in Washington National Cathedral. The service is set to start at 11 a.m. with President Joe Biden expected to deliver a eulogy.
Carter’s body has been lying in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda since Jan. 7, allowing the public to honor his memory. The state funeral is by invitation only and will see family members, government officials, and other dignitaries in attendance. Following the service, his remains will be transported to his hometown of Plains, Georgia for a private burial.
Carter passed away on Dec. 29 at age 100, making him the longest-lived U.S. president. He is remembered for serving as the 39th U.S. president from 1977-1981 and for his humanitarian efforts through The Carter Center.
