Dozens were arrested Saturday night in New York City as Knicks fans flooded the streets to celebrate the team’s first NBA championship in over 50 years — a night of historic joy that quickly turned chaotic.
Fans erupted across Times Square, Central Park and outside Madison Square Garden the moment New York defeated the San Antonio Spurs. Some fans climbed light poles, while others and jumped on buses in the excitement.
As the night wore on, five school buses were set on fire in Times Square, five police cars were damaged and mounted officers in protective gear were deployed to push the crowds back.
The NYPD reported 63 arrests on charges including assault and resisting arrest.
