Line dancing: Stepping into Miami’s nightlife scene (includes video story)

Line dancing is quickly becoming a go-to activity in Miami, attracting everyone from seasoned dancers to first-timers. But what is it about this dance craze that’s making it such a hit?

Line dancing has been around since the 1970s, but in recent years, it has seen a major resurgence. It consists of a series of choreographed steps, repeated in patterns.

Camila Salaverria, a local line dance enthusiast attends Country Night with all her friends. “I have looked forward to it since Monday,” she said. “I count down the days until I can come.”

“I’ll learn it on TikTok, but once you’re there, it’s easy to pick up,” she added. “The more you have fun with it the easier it is to learn it.”

Salaverria, like many young dancers, hopped on the line dancing trend in the summer of 2023, when the country music trend went viral on TikTok. Popular fan-created dances to songs like “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “Austin” have fueled the movement, attracting a younger crowd.

“I’ll learn it on TikTok, but once you’re there, it’s easy to pick up. The more you have fun with it, the easier it is to learn. It just becomes really addicting,” said Salaverria.

Delvin Henry, a line dance instructor for 17 years, has watched the dance style evolve. Initially rooted in traditional country music, line dancing has now incorporated trendy remixes of hip-hop, rock, and other genres.

“The younger crowd has been picking up and seeing how cool this was,” Henry said.

Christopher Valle, manager at Miami Brewing Co., has seen line dancing’s popularity grow significantly over the past five years. The event, which started with 200 guests per night, now attracts around 750 people every Friday.

“I think it’s the environment,” Valle said. “People can just get together and not have to worry about going out to clubs.”
