“Living While Dying”: A conversation with author Thom Barrett (includes video story)

Thom Barrett, an author, businessman, Boston College graduate and father of two, sat down for a conversation with our sister publication, ArtSpeak to discuss his 35-year career, passion for technology and pursuit of adventure – as well as his eight-year battle with prostate cancer.

Barrett is the author of ”Living While Dying” (2024) and “Chasing My Northern Lights.” (2024).

“Chasing My Northern Lights,” aims to be an aid for those in search of hope. Barrett’s unique perspective allows for readers to find the power within while navigating their trails.

An inspiring wake-up call to embrace and live in every moment. “Living While Dying” is a mix between adventure and resilience. A guiding light for others experiencing life’s hardest challenges to remain optimistic and powerful.

“I’ve always lived large…my world didn’t come to an end,” said Barrett. “I figured it was cancer, I’ve dealt with it before.”

As a former PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) partner, now enjoying the tranquility of Cape Cod in retirement, Barrett (69), dedicates his creativity to crafting bespoke furniture. Bespoke furniture is custom furniture that cannot be mass-produced or bought off the shelf.

His commitment to the community is expressed through his volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and his role as a set builder for the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Cotuit Center offers a variety of educational programs, performances, and exhibitions. The center has established itself as a great place to celebrate the arts.

Yet, amidst this vibrant mosaic of giving back and retirement, Barrett suffers from depression and a deeply personal struggle, including his battle with cancer.

“From 2023 to now, I have a heightened sensitivity of making the most of every moment,” Barrett explains. “Most importantly, the importance of family and support structures.”
