Thousands gathered at LoanDepot Park on Tuesday to honor the life and service of 27-year-old Sheriff’s Deputy Devin Jaramillo, who was killed in the line of duty less than two weeks ago.
The stadium, usually home to the Miami Marlins, became the site of a solemn farewell as police officers, community members, friends and grieving family members gathered to pay tribute to a young deputy remembered for his bravery.
Jaramillo was killed last month by 21-year-old Steven Rustrian after responding to what appeared to be a routine traffic crash in Southwest Miami-Dade. The incident escalated into a violent struggle in which Rustrian disarmed Jaramillo, snatched his service revolver and shot him multiple times before killing himself.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz expressed deep grief, acknowledging that “there are no words that can ease this kind of pain,” while pledging to carry Jaramillo’s memory “with the respect and reverence that he earned.” As officers saluted his flag-draped casket, she assured the family that the department stands beside them.
The devastated family and friends continue to mourn and remember Jaramillo, not just as an officer who made a lifesaver but as a beloved part of their community.
