The Cuban community reunited at Versailles Cuban Cuisine Monday, one year after the 7/11 protests inside Cuba. Their goal, to protest and bring awareness to oppression caused by the Cuban government. It was just one of the protests that were held nationwide.
Protesters in Little Havana brought flags, signs and megaphones to voice their support for the country.
Not only were Cuban-Americans there, but people from Nicaragua, Venezuela and Colombia showed up to voice that their countries are also under oppressive governments.
For decades, the Versailles restaurant has been an icon representing the Cuban culture in Miami. Holding this event here has significant meaning behind the Cuban heritage in the United States.
“This is over because it is the Cuban youth that is rebelling” said Miguel Saveira in Spanish, one of the leaders of the protests.
Samantha Gutierrez is a Latina freshman majoring in Digital Communication and Media. She is bilingual and enjoys covering stories about the environment and her community. With a strong passion for broadcasting, she aspires to pursue a career as a multimedia journalist in Miami.
Esteban Rodriguez is a sophomore majoring in TV/Broadcast media. He is a producer for Caplin News and FIU's Sports show, Sideline. He hopes to pursue this path of producing for Sports Networks and/or Hollywood in the Film Industry.
Javier is a student at FIU working towards a Digital Communications and Media major with a minor in English. His end goal is to get a broadcast job in a live production studio or work as a multimedia journalist for VICE. He enjoys spending his free time playing tabletop games, watching YouTube, and trying to find the bottom of Reddit’s frontpage.
