Local Heat fans react to the Jimmy Butler drama (includes video story)

There is trouble in the 305, and Heat fans have opinions.

Jimmy Butler is the most recent Miami star to have a conflict with Heat president Pat Riley. The six-time all star’s contract is up after this season and he has made it clear that he wants out.

“It honestly breaks my heart because Jimmy’s the heart and soul of our team,” said fan Daniel Mena. “And you know in the playoffs he’s gonna turn up and go crazy. But right now he wants to leave us. So we’re losing our heart so I don’t know where that leaves our season.”

One issue is salary. Many fans believe that Riley does not want to give a max contract to the 35-year-old Butler, the player who led Miami to two underdog appearances in the NBA Finals in four seasons.

“I think they’re both right,” said Mena. “I think Jimmy Butler is just trying to look after his best interests. If we’re talking [over] 100 million dollars, I’ll start acting like a drama queen myself.”

Although some fans disagree with Butler’s actions, they say he will be welcomed back if he chooses to stay.

“Miami’s done a lot for him,” said fan Jose Gonzalez. “Great player. But you know I think he’s going the wrong way…I would definitely [welcome him back]. He’s done a lot for the team and we’ve won with him.”
