Man in Jupiter encounters a young black bear

Jupiter resident Doug Covin was shocked when he came face to face with a black bear sitting in a tree.

“I didn’t know what it was at first,” said Covin. “I’m looking right at him and I [think to myself] ‘what am I looking at? That’s a bear staring at me.'”

After Doug Covin registered the bear’s presence, he backed away and called 911. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says that these sightings are rare in this part of South Florida, but not impossible. Juvenile bears, like the one Covin saw, have a tendency to wander off.

Authorities have set up traps to catch the young bear when it resurfaces in the city.
