“Marie Antoinette” is making a comeback for a second season premiere that will be released in the U.S. tonight, March 23, at 10 p.m. on PBS, PBS.org and on the PBS app.
In honor of the highly anticipated season two premiere, PBS is hosting a reception celebrating the premiere. It will be held this Saturday, March 29, at the Doral Contemporary Art Museum pop-up space in CityPlace Doral on the penultimate day of Miami Women’s Month.
The historical drama show takes a deeper look at the life and rumors around one of history’s most famous women. The first season dove into her early life and the transition to queen of France in 1774 following her marriage to King Louis XVI. It explored themes of feminism while looking at history and retelling the story through a modern lens.
“Marie Antoinette is a very interesting character,” the show’s producer, Claude Chelli, told “An Inside Look with PBS.” “She was the early feminist; she wanted to build her own life and decide her own destiny.”
The stellar cast made the characters come alive with dynamic performances. Portrayed masterfully by Emilia Schüle as the titular monarch. Season 1 took a deeper look at the beginning of her arrival to Versailles. Only a teenager and away from her home, the Austrian -born future queen is forced to adjust to the French way of life and thrown into a marriage for political reasons.
She emerged as the confident queen of France. Many ups and downs followed.
Season one came alive with the beautiful costumes created by series’ costume designer Marie Fremont and elaborate set designs by roduction designers Clovis Weils and Pierre Queffelean. Every detail was carefully crafted to transport audiences into the lavashes and intricate riches that defined the Rococo era.
The debut year showed the Bavarian princess’s transformation into the queen of style and a true fashion icon. As she attempts to recreate Versailles in her image: independent, free, and feminist. But defamatory pamphlets and persistent rumors about her private life undermine her status, and her opponents within the Royal Family do everything they can to bring her down.
Season two will delve more into the characters and their lives. Viewers promise bigger and stronger enemies waiting to destroy Marie Antionette. The higher she climbs in the estimation of the French people, the greater are the threats against her.
