This past July 5, A24 released their highly anticipated film “MaXXXine,” the latest of the glamorous yet gory trilogy.
“I could never have anticipated us talking again for this third movie and that its become a trilogy. It’s all very surreal,” says Mia Goth, star of the trilogy during an interview with Collider Ladies Nights.
“MaXXXine” is the latest film following “Pearl” and “X,” where Mia Goth goes through stages of repeated heartbreak and a relentless chase to fame turns into rage.
Picking up where “X” left off, Maxine Minks is leaving the massacre at Pearl’s farm and heading to Hollywood to chase her dreams as a big-time actress since she’s only made it to the adult film industry.
Set in the 1980s, Minks has proven she will do whatever it takes to be a star, but she has to do so while the notorious serial killer, the Night Stalker, also runs rampant in her city.
While she does not go head to head with the serial killer, this shows the production team’s detailed process to encompass the mood and setting and an added depth to the theme.
How far will Maxine go to be a superstar? Will she put herself in danger again just to be famous?
“This movie is really trying to put you in the 1980s, but also in the style of filmmaking so that it feels like the movies of the ’80s,” said Ti West, director of the trilogy, during an interview with Vanity Fair.
The cast also did not fall short of the expectations and anticipation for the film, which included singers such as Hasley, Lily Collins, and Kevin Bacon.
The trilogy is versatile and gains much popularity with each release of the films.
“Maxxxine,” the most recent release, already has the highest gross in domestic box office out of the three.
“They are very much stand-alone films, although they are enhanced if you watch them together,” says Goth.
West, with the help of Goth, made sure to capture the essence of “female rage” and stay consistent with the storyline that went viral with the initial release.
He does so both explicitly through the storyline and Maxine having flashbacks of the traumatic events, but also by placing props in the background from “X” and “Pearl.”
“This movie has an enormous amount of things like that referencing the other movies,” says West.
Despite the anticipation, West’s movie was released alongside other big names like the “Despicable Me” franchise and the “Inside Out” series. It landed at number four in the domestic box office the week of its release.
The films’ and Goth’s character have been a hit since the first release and there is no doubt she will remain in the spotlight. Her scenes of intense rage have been clipped, gone viral, and used as a reference for future roles and actresses that want to be a true scream queen.
Goth says she is “working on higher profile movies,” so film lovers can look forward to seeing her on other upcoming releases such as “Frankenstein.”
