On Oct. 13, Miami Beach honored international music icon Gloria Estefan with the unveiling of Gloria Estefan Way on Ocean Drive and 13th Street. The event drew city officials, residents and fans who gathered to celebrate Estefan’s influence on music and her contributions to the Miami community. The street runs alongside the Cardozo Hotel, a historic Art Deco landmark that Gloria and her husband, Emilio Estefan, purchased in 1990 and later restored as part of their investment in preserving Miami Beach’s cultural heritage.

During the ceremony, city leaders praised Estefan’s role in the community and fans waved Cuban flags while singing along to her hits as the new street sign was revealed.

The Miami Beach Commission for Women first proposed the idea, emphasizing the need to recognize more women in the city. Commissioners described the new street naming as a step toward equality, celebrating women’s achievements that helped define the city’s growth and identity.

“When women are invisible you don’t know what you can accomplish with no role models,” said Miami Beach Chair Commissioner Dr. Lynette Long. “It’s like a stamp, a mirror, to see yourself. When they put women on street names, little girls and woman walk by, they read it and say ‘Hey, maybe I could do that, maybe I can be a singer, or a mayor or an athlete’.”

She added: “Whatever it is, women need role models.”
