Miami Book Fair brings big crowds and star authors to downtown (includes video story)

The annual Miami Book Fair wrapped up yesterday at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus in downtown. The weeklong event drew crowds for author signings, book sales and workshops.

“I came to look at options,” said attendee Xiomara Yera. “I like novels about everyday life. “In fact, I came across a Cuban-American author whose book I bought and am reading now, since I like biographies and historical novels…I think there’s a wide variety of all of these.”

The fair also hosted its popular “Evenings With” series, in which writers participate in panel discussions about their latest work and creative process. This year’s lineup included Mercedes Ron, the New York Times bestselling author known for the “Culpables” saga, and Arthur Sze, the 25th U.S. poet laureate.

For many visitors, the mission behind the event is simple: to inspire a love of reading and make literature accessible to everyone, especially in today’s digital world.

“I think we’re in a time and age where a lot of us are on social media, on the internet, and we are really not reading as much as we should anymore”, said attendee Jeannie Kuang-Nguyen. “I think a lot of people are losing that knowledge of society, and that for me was really important to come here and visit those tables.”
