The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners postponed its decision to rebuild a new waste-to-energy incinerator yesterday morning.
The deferral came after the commission directed the Miami-Dade County administration to present a report detailing every available waste solution and its financial impact within the next 120 days.
“Not making a decision is making a decision,” said Commissioner Roberto J. Gonzalez. “This is costing the county more money every single day that we don’t make a decision.”
Frustrations escalate as the debate surrounding the incinerator approaches its seventh month. For some, however, the deferral is an opportunity to keep pushing for zero-waste solutions.
“We think it’s good in the fact that we can continue to advocate for our position against incineration and for a real zero-waste solution to waste management within the county,” said Marcelo Valladares, a representative with Sierra Club. “We’re going to be making sure that we take advantage of the time that we have until then.”
Commissioners will resume talks about the incinerator on July 16th.
