Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava pays a visit to FIU (includes video story)

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava visited Florida International University’s Lee Caplin School of Journalism in North Miami Friday, where she spoke with students about leadership, challenges in office and her personal journey.

The panel, moderated by WLRN reporter and FIU alum Natalie La Roche Pietri, covered topics ranging from policy issues to questions about a possible recall effort, while also highlighting the mayor’s role as the first woman to lead the county.

Students in attendance said the visit was both informative and inspiring.

“I think it’s incredible that she came here to speak about her experiences and to relate to the students, especially during Women’s Month,” said student Brenda Miranda.

Others emphasized the impact of representation in leadership.

“Just the focus on being the first woman mayor of Miami-Dade County is such a big feat,” said student Chloe Barnett. “A lot of the women leadership that we are seeing today in Miami-Dade has taken a boom.”

Students were also given the opportunity to ask questions directly, gaining insight into the challenges Levine Cava faces in office.

“I just think that more community leaders should take the time to speak to students to help build our future leaders,” Barnett said.
