Gas prices rise in South Florida as spring break traffic arrives (includes video story)

Drivers in Miami are seeing higher costs at the pump as gas prices rise across South Florida. At a gas station near Florida International University, one driver said the increase was noticeable.

“I was shocked,” said Liliana Delram, an FIU student. “I just put gas two weeks ago and it was around $2.30, and now it’s $3.50.”

Florida has no oil refineries — facilities that turn crude oil into gasoline — so most of the fuel used in the state must be shipped in through Port Everglades before it reaches local gas stations.

With spring break crowds arriving in South Florida, more drivers on the road could mean burning even more fuel getting around the area.
