‘Miami Vice’ documentary debuts during 48th Annual Art Deco Weekend (includes video story)

Detective duo Sonny Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs graced the big screen once more this past weekend since their debut in the ’80s cop drama “Miami Vice.”

Fans saw the courageous detectives, colorful suits and coldhearted bad guys again for an exclusive screening of “Everything Came From Miami Vice,” a new documentary created by actor, producer and superfan Derek Hedlund.

“[Producing this documentary] is the greatest thing I could ever do in my life because it’s my favorite TV show,” said Hedlund. “And I literally get to live through the 80s, which I was not around for, and it’s like I’m on the set.”

The feature-length film was shown during the 48th Annual Art Deco Weekend celebration, which honors the architecture, arts and culture of Miami, staples of the city since the 1920s.

“Miami Vice helped the Miami Design Preservation League to preserve the art deco [style], which you don’t see anymore unless you go back to Manhattan,” said Hedlund. “Miami Vice highlighted it and brought its attention to the world, and now people come to see those same buildings they saw on [the show] 40 years ago.”

The screening was followed by an intimate Q&A with cast and crew members from the show, where fans got to hear firsthand accounts of the makings of the television classic.

“None of that stuff is on any of the DVDs or Blu-ray, so it was a real treat to see it,” said fan and screening attendee Steve Riccardo, who was dressed in a white suit and turquoise shirt as a nod to protagonist Sonny Crockett’s eclectic style.

There are more stories, more memories and more fun to be shared. Hedlund explains that the documentary is essentially a living piece, as he plans to interview more cast and crew members to add on to the film.

You can catch “Everything Came From Miami Vice” again this September for an exclusive screening at the second annual “Miami Vice Reunion,” an event created by Hedlund that brings together the stars, crew and fans of the show for a weekend full of themed events and festivities. This year’s celebration is the 41st anniversary.
