Beyond the uniform (includes podcast)

Beyond the Uniform is a podcast that focuses on the transition from military service to college and civilian life. Through conversations with student veterans at Florida International University, the podcast highlights the challenges veterans face when leaving the structured environment of the military and adjusting to school, new routines and civilian expectations.

Episode one: Cynthia Toone

Episode one features Cynthia Toone, who shares her experience leaving the military during the COVID-19 pandemic. She talks about dealing with medical issues, missing her first semester of college and struggling to find work after separation. Cynthia explains how the FIU Veterans Affairs office helped her feel supported, manage anxiety and stay on track academically during a difficult transition.

Episode two: Fred Mourad

Episode two centers on Fred Mourad, who reflects on his years of military service and what it was like to start college later than most students. Fred describes losing the daily structure of the military and struggling during his first semester at FIU, especially with challenging classes and feeling out of place. He shares how support from the veteran’s office helped him adjust to school life and keep moving forward.
