Soldiers adjust to society after leaving the military (includes video story)

At Florida International University, student veterans say the shift from military life to college feels overwhelming as they adjust to new routines, academic demands and civilian expectations. U.S. Navy veteran Lorena Gonzalez described the emotional weight of rediscovering her identity and purpose .

“You have to grieve who you were before the military,” said Gonzalez. “You have to grieve who you became, and then you have to grieve who you have to let go.”

For many veterans, the process can bring confusion and uncertainty while they learn how to navigate benefits, education and life after service.

Florida International University’s Office of Veteran and Military Affairs connects veterans with academic planning, GI Bill guidance and community resources designed to help them succeed. Through that support, many student veterans are finding direction and building a new mission beyond the uniform.
