Lawmakers call for heightened security at the Capitol following Minnesota shooting (includes video story)

Following the assassination of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman, lawmakers are calling for heightened security at the Capitol. The Capitol Police and the Sergeant at Arms are coordinating with local law enforcement and intelligence agencies to evaluate potential threats to both members of Congress and the Capitol complex.

The increased security has sparked varying reactions inside the Senate offices, particularly among interns who are navigating the tense atmosphere.

“It’s good to not only keep our senators safe, elected representatives, but also the people, the staff, everyone else who’s here, and even security,” said intern Anya Parasher.

With more visible police and fewer open entry points, the changes are being felt by everyone entering the Capitol, from staff to visitors. While some may see it as a necessary inconvenience, others express concern about the balance between safety and accessibility.
