Mother’s Day is one of the most celebrated holidays of the year, and Miami is known as one of the most diverse cities in the country.
With that comes millions of people from different backgrounds, with heavily populated city having areas that are mainly Cuban, Haitian, and Venezuelan among many others.
The diversity is clear in the many small communities in Miami and each community has their own unique traditions and distinctive customs on how they celebrate Mother’s Day.

In Miami, one of the most prominent communities is the Hispanic community and the way they choose to love and celebrate mothers may be a bit different from what other communities are doing. According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day is the fourth-highest average per person spending on any holiday or occasion, with 91% of Hispanic Americans celebrating the holiday.

Typically, one family will host a big get-together with several of their closest friends and family. The celebration lasts late into the night.
About 59% of Hispanic communities celebrate Mother’s Day by hosting a barbecue, and that is the highest percentage among four other cultures where data was taken from. In Hispanic communities, they celebrate a bit differently than other cultures and that is by hosting a barbecue or cookout as the Mother’s Day celebration.

I took some time to sit down with a few people at a local Brazilian restaurant and asked them some questions about what their Mother’s Day plans this year would be.
“I just want to do something simple that I know I will enjoy and it will make everyone else happy,” said Lise Oliveira, who is originally from Rio De Janeiro.
Since she is from Brazil, she told me that one of the main hosting events that they have consistently throughout the year is barbecues, and Mother’s Day is no different.
“Mother’s Day is one of the few guaranteed events where I know we will be having a barbecue with music, alcohol, and all the moms I know,” said Oliveira.

In contrast to the Latino community, other communities like the Asian and Black communities feel strongly about celebrating all the women in their lives and not limiting the celebration to just one woman.
According to the Collage Report, many Asian countries are more collectivist, meaning that social norms prioritize the community over the individual.
They choose to celebrate all women and it is an emphasis on humility and respect to all women. Black Americans reflect on all the women in their community who may have helped raise them into the adults they are today.

In recent years, spending on Mother’s Day has been rising, and there are multiple reasons why that is happening. The various gifts, flowers, small tokens of appreciation, and big gestures of love for all women across the country have become evident.
The pressure of social media also plays a big part in why spending has increased on this particular day. The rise of social media and showing off how much you can do for the person you love has become a trend that has only been becoming more extravagant as the years pass. Each year people post their appreciation for the women in their lives by showing off these big purchases, and it seems like the more you spend and the more you do, the more people will see you as taking care of your own and always showing out.
Retailers have been marketing Mother’s Day with various promotions and targeted advertising. These companies are after you and depend on these strategies to make money, that is how they increase sales on mothers day.
They promote their product as an exclusive Mother’s Day item that is perfect for your social media and will show everyone just how much you love your mom. People want their mothers to feel special and they want everyone around them to also have an insight on their lives and what they can provide for their family.
