Early Friday morning, 42-year-old David DePape broke into Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s home in San Francisco. The House Speaker was in Washington, D.C. during the time of the break-in, but her husband Paul was home.
Officials say Paul Pelosi was able to call 911 at the beginning of the attack. As officers arrived at the home, they say they saw DePape “violently assault” Pelosi with a hammer before they tackled him to the ground and arrested him on the scene.
The Justice Department filed federal criminal charges on Monday against DePape for assault and attempted kidnapping of a U.S. official. DaPape still faces state charges that include attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, elder abuse and other felonies.
The charges against DePape carry a maximum sentence of up to 50 years in prison.
