The naturalized and ready-to-vote tour stops at Miami International Airport (includes video story)

On Sept. 20, a naturalization and voting event was held at the Miami International Airport by several nonprofit organizations that work with immigrants – the National Partnership for New Americans, Florida Immigrant Coalition and New American Voters.

The idea was to address crucial election issues.

Among these issues: to encourage immigrants to pursue naturalization and ensure that those who are naturalized are registered to vote.

The most important issues to immigrants are high living costs, healthcare and safety, said Javier Del Castillo, the Florida Immigrant Coalition’s digital organizing manager.

“There are a lot of issues,” he said, “like fair housing, like good healthcare.”

About 400,000 legal residents in the United States are eligible for naturalization to become U.S. citizens, according to a press release issued at the event.
