First Hit is an investigative podcast series that explores the science, psychology, and real-life impact of nicotine addiction, with a particular focus on adolescents and young adults.

The series combines scientific research with personal narratives to examine a central question: At what point does a social habit become a pharmacological dependency?

Episode 1: The Science Behind the First Hit

Florida International University professor Alyn Fernandez explains how nicotine affects the brain’s reward system, particularly in teenagers.

The episode explores key concepts such as brain plasticity, dopamine regulation, and the biological mechanisms that make young people especially vulnerable to addiction.

By grounding the discussion in scientific research, the episode helps listeners understand how experimentation can gradually transition into dependency, often without immediate awareness.

Episode 2: Why Quit? A Personal Journey Through Addiction

Former nicotine user Alejandro shares his journey through addiction. He reflects on physical and psychological consequences of nicotine use, and challenges faced while quitting.

His testimony provides insight into the lived reality of dependency, including the mental and behavioral struggles associated with withdrawal and recovery.
