Fans lined up at retailers Wednesday night to be among the first to own the new Nintendo Switch 2.
22-year-old Miami resident Gonzalo Velarde could hardly believe the time had arrived.
“It kinda feels kinda unreal,” Velarde exclaimed. “I’m hyped, but like, it doesn’t feel real.”
GameStops across the country – as well as many other outlets – held midnight launch events in celebration of the new Nintendo Switch 2 console. Those who lined up outside were among the first to pick up the new gaming system.
At one store, near Miami International Airport, the action began at 8 p.m. with a Mario Kart 64 tournament hosted by the store. Gamers new and old played together, with the winner receiving a $50 GameStop gift card.
Hosting a console release is no easy task. Store employees had to undergo special training. They also had to rearrange entire sections of the store to handle the incoming inventory.
GameStop store manager Joel Creme was well prepared.
“This has been a one to two-month endeavor,” Creme said. “Today’s the last stretch.”
