On Oct. 18, hundreds gathered at downtown Miami’s Torch of Friendship to protest recent actions by the Trump administration. The movement, organized by the national group “No Kings,” is calling attention to what it describes as growing threats to democracy and equality in the U.S.
The organization first gained global attention in June after mobilizing millions to peacefully counter a military parade celebrating President Trump’s birthday. This time, protestors returned to voice opposition to federal agents being deployed into cities and what they view as authoritarian overreach.
“This leadership is not what America stands for,” said Mike Sekula, a protester at the rally. “Whether it’s about healthcare or immigrants or just fascism-you know what this leadership is doing, and that’s what we have a problem with.”
Union and community groups, including the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), stood alongside protesters to emphasize unity and peaceful resistance.
“We’re in the street to send the message–there’s no king in America,” said Margarette Nerette, SEIU co-vice president. “We’ll never have a king in America.”
