A winter storm that touched down in the Northeast yesterday made for a dangerous morning commute today. Roads in Boston were slick and snow-covered. Forecasters warn this is just the start of a “winter blitz” expected to last for weeks.
Some areas are struggling. In Ontario, New York, there is a shortage of rock salt.
“We can typically put 20 tons in a truck, but right now we’re keeping everyone at a 5-ton limit,” said Mike Seitz of Lakeside Quality Building Products.
In Kansas City, Missouri, icy roads led to crashes and closures.
“One moment it’s fine,” recalled Keely McLouth, who was stuck in a multi-car pileup for seven hours. “The next you’re spinning out and crashing.”
Officials urge drivers to stay prepared. With more snow ahead, travelers should exercise caution.
“Have water, something to eat, chargers . . . and stay in your car if stranded,” warned Brooke Rohlfing of the Missouri Department of Transportation.
