Military aircraft take over Ocean Drive on Memorial Day weekend

Dozens of military aircraft and ships will take over the skies and shorelines of Ocean Drive this Memorial Day weekend as the Hyundai Air & Sea Show returns. 

The free event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, celebrates the strength and determination of the United States military. Activities include a special powerboat race and a variety of air demonstrations.

“There is no better time than Memorial Day weekend to pay tribute to our military, first responders and those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of our freedom,” said Mickey Markoff, executive producer of the Hyundai Air & Sea Show.

Throughout the day, guests will see a variety of jets take to the skies including F-22 Raptors, B-1 Lancer Bombers, F-16 Fighting Falcons and more in demonstrations over the ocean and sand. Besides jet events, attendees will also have a chance to see other events like parachute teams skydiving and a combat Search and Rescue demonstration. 

Anb enlistment swearing-in ceremony will take place on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. at Show Center where recruits from all six branches of the military will take their oath of enlistment conducted by Gen. Thomas A. Bussiere, commander of Air Force Global Strike Command.

Carson Wolf, an aviation survival technician at the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in Miami will take part in Saturday’s “search and rescue” demo.

“People should come to support all the guys and the different assets that’ll be flying this weekend,” said Wolf. “Enjoy the show and see what the military is all about.”

Also included for free is the Florida Power & Light Patriot Display Village, located east of Lummus Park along Ocean Drive between 11th and 14th Streets spanning five blocks. This area will include a variety of military assets like an M1 Abrams Tank, F-16 fighter jet and more for guests to get up close and personal with. The Florida Power & Light Display Village is home to the Memorial Day Flag Remembrance Garden, a tribute honoring the lives and sacrifices of 3,000 fallen soldiers from South Florida.

Located within the Florida Power & Light Patriot Display Village will be the Monster Energy Action Zone where guests will witness motocross stunt performances by top athletes in the nation. Performances will take place regularly both Saturday and Sunday.

For younger guests, the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Kids Zone will present a “Stay Fit” aviation-themed obstacle course, as well as inflatables, rock climbing walls, photo opportunities and other interactive areas that promote education and being active.
