Offshore racing has a long-standing tradition in the Sunshine State, and this year the American Powerboat Association (APBA) National Series concluded in Clearwater.
Due to disruptions in a previous race in Michigan City, many classes of boats raced on both Saturday and Sunday to make up for lost laps.
Fans in attendance witnessed one of the largest fields of the season, featuring more than 90 boats.
Thanks to the glass-calm water on Sunday, the boats reached speeds exceeding 160 mph.
“We had our big wheels on,” said Supercat driver Chris Grant, referring to the size of the propellers attached to his boat. “We were going pretty fast, so when we hit those turns, the g-forces were intense.”
Offshore racing will return to Florida for the Key West World Championships, scheduled for Nov. 1-7.
