Online scams rise as Valentine’s Day nears, law enforcement warns (includes video story)

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and the hunt for love — and fraud — is on.

With romance in the air, scammers are taking advantage of those looking for that special someone. FBI officials warn consumers of the dangerous scams sweeping the nation.

Jane Moss, a private investigator and retired FBI agent, says fraudulent activity can damage not only a person’s bank account, but also their and emotional wellbeing. “It’s very difficult between your actual loss and your personal loss,” she said.

Nearly 65,000 people were affected by Valentine’s Day scams in 2023 alone. Chris Delzotto, the FBI’s Financial Crime Unit chief, advises consumers to avoid those unwilling to meet in person and become familiar with the signs of suspicious activities.
