Monday night’s intense thunderstorms swept through Orange County, leaving a path of destruction in their wake. A lightning strike ignited a fire and partially collapsed the attic of a home, while just a mile away, a rare waterspout formed over a retention pond.
According to Orange County Fire Rescue, one person was inside the home at the time the lightning struck but managed to escape unharmed.
Deseret Shearer, a resident, witnessed another striking sight a mile away: water spinning over the retention pond behind her house. Before witnessing tiles flying off a neighbor’s roof, Shearer reported hearings thunderclaps.
As soon as the waterspout formed, she started filming.
“You don’t see it very often,” said Shearer. “It comes out of nowhere, and it’s invisible. It starts out of nowhere, and it’s there.”
