President Biden traveled to Tampa yesterday to try and turn up the heat on Republicans in the escalating fight over the future of Social Security and Medicare. He said, “Look, I know that a lot of Republicans.. their dream is to cut Social Security and Medicare. Well, let me say this: if that’s your dream, I’m your nightmare.”
During his speech, Biden waved a pamphlet highlighting Republican senator Rick Scott’s plan to sunset all federal legislation every five years, including Social Security and Medicare. In a recent interview with CNN, the Senator said, “I wrote the plan, and I’ve been clear about it…he’s been a complete failure. And now he lies about what I want to get done.”
The President is gearing up for a face-off with the GOP over the debt ceiling and those who wish to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act. This act includes caps on insulin and Medicare negotiating prescription drug prices.
All of the topics discussed could be central to a 2024 re-election bid by the president. A recent ABC Washington Post poll shows that 58% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said they would prefer another candidate. If Biden decides to run, he could face either former President Donald Trump or Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
