Fort Lauderdale residents left in despair after heavy rain (includes video story)

The flooding and extreme weather in Florida have had a severe impact on the Edgewood neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale, where homes and cars were submerged.

Residents have lost many of their belongings due to the floodwater, which is full of debris, contaminants, and bacteria.

David Fernandez is among the flood victims who had to evacuate his home and take shelter. He stayed at his cousin’s house until his place could be restored.

“We have been sleeping the four of us in one bedroom,” said Fernandez.

Jacinta Alvarez, Fernandez’s wife, noticed water flowing into their backyard. When she checked her room, she discovered that it was already filled with water.

“When we wanted to get out, there were many cars and everyone was on boats and kayaks trying to get out,” said Alvarez. “I have just this bottle of chardonnay left in the fridge. It’s for my depression. I’m very depressed this happened.”

Edgewood residents are questioning their ability to endure erratic and severe weather after the recent flood, even as they strive to recover from the damage.
