Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law this past May 15 banning addition of fluoride to Florida’s public water systems, calling it “forced medication.” It takes effect July 1, eliminating a decades-old practice that dentists credit with preventing 25% of cavities statewide.
Dental professionals warn the change will hit vulnerable communities hardest.
“The most at-risk are areas where people can’t see dentists regularly, or kids aren’t taught proper care,” said Dr. Monica Vigon of Fontainebleau Dentistry in Miami.
With fluoride disappearing from taps this summer, experts urge families to prioritize dental visits as cavities may become more frequent and severe.
The move makes Florida the second state to outlaw fluoridation. Advocates say the change removes a dangerous chemical that can cause bone cancer if taken in a heavier dose than is in the drinking water.
