Wildlife expert Ron Magill hosts a special Valentine’s Day event for zoogoers (includes video story)

For the first time since 2020, Zoo Miami’s Ron Magill will be presenting “Sex and the Animals”, a Valentine’s Day event that educates audience members on how animals mate, court and reproduce.

“You’re going to see things that you have either done or you’ve thought about doing, but you didn’t talk about it because you thought it was weird; you thought it was kinky, a little unnatural,” said Magill who added new material in this year’s presentation, including images he took in Patagonia of elephant seals doing things that he said he didn’t know was possible.

“The bottom line, you’ll see how many things animals do that are totally natural,” he said. “They’re not kinky, and there’s a reason behind it, and you don’t have to feel guilty.”

When Magill first proposed doing the lecture in the 1980s, it was not approved by the board, with one member calling it animal pornography. But the zoo’s founding director later gave him the okay to do it.

According to Magill, “Sex and the Animals” is the only presentation ever done at the zoo that has sold out every time.

Some people attended the event multiple times, including Zoo Miami’s integrated communications and events manager Andrea Obregón.

“It never gets boring,” she said. “Ron is an incredible photographer. He captures the animals in these compromising positions. And the way he explains it, he gets very animated. [It’s] just incredibly entertaining.”

The event is from 7-10 p.m. at Zoo Miami’s Sami Family Amphitheater. General admission costs $100 for singles and $175 for couples. An open bar and food are included in the cost of a ticket. Click here to learn more.
