Little girl is swept into Sarasota storm drain and hospitalized in critical condition (includes video story)

A 5-year-old girl in Sarasota is in critical condition after being swept into a storm drain on Sunday.

The incident occurred after 6 p.m. following a water main break. The girl had been playing near a culvert with other children when she was suddenly pulled into the drain by strong currents caused by the break. Emergency services found the child in the drainage system about 100 yards west of where she had been dragged in.

“I don’t know how she could’ve fallen in,” said Tom McGee, who caught the incident on his Ring doorbell camera. “As soon as we saw that there was a child, we were very concerned.”

The case is being investigated by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
