For many Miamians, croquetas are more than just a snack, they are tradition. And few places carry on that tradition quite like Sergio’s, which marked its 50th anniversary Friday on National Croqueta Day.
The Cuban restaurant, which boasts 13 locations from Fort Lauderdalke to Kendall, has been a staple in South Florida since it opened in 1975, serving everything from breakfast sandwiches to its famous ham croquetas. Over the years, the chain has become a gathering place for families and friends to share comfort food that feels like home.
Customer Rachel Yedo said she has been coming to Sergio’s since she was a teenager.
“I started coming in high school, actually, for breakfast,” Yedo said. “We would cut class, come and have this wonderful breakfast that still exists. So I’ve been a very local customer for a very long time.”
Yedo, who is of Cuban descent, said Sergio’s helps her family stay connected to their culture.
“I was born here, but my parents are Cuban,” she said. “So the next best thing is our local Cuban cuisine. And our family thinks that Sergio’s does a really good job.”
On Friday, customers lined up at the the walk-up window that has become a hallmark of Miami dining to pick up croquetas, sandwiches and other staples.
Yedo said the convenience makes Sergio’s part of her weekly routine.
“If you’re in a hurry, you can order online. But even at the ventanita, they take care of you really quickly,” she said. “You’re in and out in five to eight minutes.”
To mark the milestone, Sergio’s rolled out anniversary specials and announced plans to introduce new items to its menu. But longtime customers don’t have to worry: the croquetas aren’t going anywhere.
