Small Starts: The Heart of the Hustle (includes documentary)

This documentary follows the story of three small business owners and their struggles after the COVID-19 pandemic. Madeline Muñoz-Bustamante, owner of Colorful Cute Goods, mentions the importance of customers to small business survival. Jim Jones, the owner of Freak House, discusses limited income in an oversaturated market. Erica Porter, the owner of Myra and Company, offers insight on what it is like to be a small business owner in modern times and a digital landscape.

The short film also includes experts Brian Van Hook and Adriana Martinez, who work for organizations that aid small businesses and discuss why these issues are occurring.

An active shopper, Anna Alvarez, explains her thought process on why she chooses to shop at large corporations online rather than local small businesses. “It is just so much easier than leaving my house,” she said.

These business owners cling to hope for the future of the over-saturated small business market.
