Cycles of success: How social media transformed consumer behavior (includes mini documentary)

Social media is changing how local businesses attract and maintain customers. From empty storefronts to crowded markets, the difference in foot traffic often comes down to online visibility.

Social media has become essential to survival. Since opening in November 2025, Katherine Choux, co-owner of La Terrazza, and her husband have relied heavily on platforms like Instagram to attract customers, often seeing traffic increase only when promotions or events are posted.

Though social media can help build recognition, it requires consistent effort and a daily investment. Choux explains that “you have to invest in social media and constantly be out there in front of customers so that they can be reminded to come.”

In contrast, some businesses have found ways to use social media more strategically for long-term growth. Carolina Hernandez, co-owner of Southwest Ranches Farmers Market, says her marketing approach combines engaging content with meaningful information. Helping her build a consistent and loyal customer base.

“Yes, it has helped us balance our content in a way where we can make it fun, but at the same time informative, and at the same time… selling,” she said

To experts, this shift is part of a larger trend, where consumer behavior is increasingly shaped by digital platforms and influencer marketing. As more people discover businesses through social media rather than traditional advertising, business owners are forced to adapt or risk falling behind.

While social platforms can be a tool for growth, success ultimately depends on understanding your audience and creating a strategy that goes beyond simply following trends.
