Today marks the second anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, when Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups launched a large surprise attack on southern Israel. It resulted in one of the deadliest days in the nation’s 76-year history.
Communities around the world are still feeling the impact. In South Florida, the Jewish Federation of Broward County held a gathering this past Sunday in Davie at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center to memorialize the deceased, bring attention to hostages and commit to peace.
Hundreds attended the event, including community leaders, families and elected officials.
“This is just another example of Jewish people showing resilience after tragedy,” said Doug Berman, board chair of the Jewish Federation of Broward County.
The event also brought together speakers who reflected on the deep emotional impact the attacks have had over the past two years. There were shared prayers and moments of silence.
Local artist Beatriz Aizenstat, who has painted dozens of portraits honoring fallen soldiers, said her work is a way to remember their sacrifice: “They are giving their lives for us, just thanks to them.”
