With Halloween right around the corner, South Florida shoppers are trying to figure out how to celebrate safely amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Costume stores like Spirit Halloween have reopened with new restrictions and safety measures. A maximum of 55 customers are allowed in the store at a time, face masks are required to enter and hand sanitizer dispensers are available.
Spirit assistant manager Nani Garcia admits this Halloween season has been packed. The store has also implemented social distancing guidelines by providing markers on the floor.
“It’s been pretty rough, I’m not gonna lie. It’s been pretty packed, especially with this whole coronavirus going on,” Garcia said. “We gotta be more careful, we gotta watch out for other people and it’s just a little bit hard but same thing as working regular retail.”
Customer Emma Delamo plans to continue social distancing while celebrating from home this year.
“This Halloween I’m going to my neighbor’s house, and we’re probably just gonna watch a bunch of like Halloween movies and scary movies and just hang out for a bit at home,” Delamo said.
Many traditional celebrations have already been canceled. According to the CDC guidelines, door-to-door trick-or-treating, indoor haunted houses, and crowded indoor costume parties are ranked as high-risk activities.
